The two questions we get from people who are just starting our in their fiber journey are (1) Should I learn knitting or crochet first, and (2) which one is easier? The answer we always give is, it really depends.
Unfortunately, those questions are very hard to give a definitive answer to because everybody is different.

Knitting is, and always has been, easier for me. I learned how to knit and was knitting for at least 15 years before I even attempted to learn how to crochet. It took me a long time to stop thinking like a knitter, and to start to understand just how different this craft is. Even though I knit continental style which has a lot of similarities of crochet, I was still having a hard time with it. Once I finally understood how to do the hand motions of crochet, then I was able to start to enjoy doing the craft.
Jessica:
I also learned how to knit first. Even though it took me five long years to learn how to crochet, I actually prefer it over knitting and find that I am more proficient in this craft. In fact, I even design my own patterns for crocheted stuffed animals and wearables! However, it took a while to get there. On the other hand, I learned how to knit in just one day.
So……….
As you can see, it’s not about which craft is easier to learn or which one you should learn first. It’s about going with whichever one appeals to you. Then, once you learn the first one, the second one you can (and probably will!) learn much easier.
